For larger forces, shaft size and weight restrictions, as well as some special requirements of the shaft, the alloy steel can be used.
Ductile iron and some high-strength cast iron, cast because of good performance, easy to cast into complex shapes, and good damping properties, stress concentration sensitivity is low, the impact of fulcrum displacement is small, it is often used to create complex shape of the shaft.
In particular, the rare earth-magnesium ductile iron developed in our country has the advantages of good impact toughness, reduced wear, vibration absorption and less sensitivity to stress concentration. It has been used to make important shaft parts on automobiles, tractors and machine tools.
Depending on the working conditions, the shaft may be subjected to overall or surface treatment before or after processing as well as surface strengthening treatment such as shot peening and chemical treatment such as carburizing, nitriding, nitriding, etc. to enhance its strength Especially fatigue strength) and wear, corrosion resistance and other properties.
At normal operating temperatures, the modulus of elasticity of alloyed steel is similar to that of carbon steel, so alloy steel is not suitable for increasing the rigidity of the shaft.

Shaft diameter smaller can be made with round bars; For important, large diameter or step diameter larger shaft, using forging billet. To save metal and improve workmanship, large diameter shafts can also be made hollow, with welded or forged flanges.
